Hannity is more dangerous than Savage, since he has the backing of Fox News... and can use that soapbox to give additional voice to Savage and his ilk.

I can and do choose not to watch Hannity... but too many people -- including a very vocal member of my extended family -- are caught up in his daily spew.  I get the old "Hannity said so, and he's a real American" crap all the time.

The name Obama is not shorthand for your fears and generalizations. A reasonable person would find uplift in the story about this intelligent young man who was raised by a single mother, someone who at one time had to rely on food stamps. She pursued higher education and overcame her economic plight. That is the American way, and tens of thousands of people--Black, Latino, Asian, white and other-- have done the same.

You show your own lack of integration into the USA of today by your comments.  I'm so happy Caroaber was able to get enougth financial aid and parental support to get him through college in five years -- kudos to him.   I started in 1978 and ended in 1987, that gives you yahoos my generation.  I stopped and started, went full time and part time, however it had to be, and I never asked anyone for squat, and the only gimmes were the pell grants for straight college expenses, not those to keep me eating egg sandwiches and peanut butter and jelly, or the best of all some mac and cheese.   I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone that comes from my generation onwards -- every single person in my graduating class from high school had the exact same mininum opportunities for an education, black or other designated minorities certainly having the potential for much more.

So Obama's 'retribution' comments make my stomach turn.  I was raised in deep east Texas and my father taught us to respect all people, all races, unlike many other houselholds around us -- so I am sickened by this rampant retribution mentality -- it trashes good men like my father and his father before him and the values they taught to their children.

It is the minority families who have, and continue, to fail to teach their children of the opportunities in the United States of America.

Yes, M Dove, there is a need for affirmative action (AA).  However, you do not make AA the first criteria for a hiring or a promotion.  The first should be competency.  If you have two candidates for a certain position and both are equally qualified then I would agree that AA should now be the tiebreaker.

What my friend was against was that some people were promoted by using AA as the first and often sole criteria.   These same people who were promoted over him had to be tutored by him since they had no idea what they got themselves into.

Yes, I am aware of our recent history and the legal discrimination that was present not too long ago.  But that is still no reason to make AA the first reason why a person should be promoted or not.

For federal contractors and subcontractors, affirmative action must be taken by covered employers to recruit and advance qualified minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and covered veterans. Affirmative actions include training programs, outreach efforts, and other positive steps. These procedures should be incorporated into the company’s written personnel policies. Employers with written affirmative action programs must implement them, keep them on file and update them annually.

This is according to US department of labor.  You're friend has every right to sue if they were promoting people based on race alone and not qualifications.  Especially if he has proof that they did this. 

However, I have to admit I'm skeptical.  Lot's of people have been jumped for promotions by people they trained and without knowing what's in your friends file I can't just believe it solely around race.  Who knows maybe he p'ssed off his boss and that's the real reason he hasn't been promoted.  

I'm certain that this kind of thing only happens when an organization has grossly violated AA laws in the past and are becoming worried about the possibility of a lawsuit. A firm that is already light on scruples and desperatly needs to hire minorities in a hurry is the only group that will risk the law and its own benefit by practicing what AA critics bemoan as "reverse racism"
